Locating Serial Numbers

Serial numbers for different models of Burroughs machine are often difficult to find. Unlike the early machines, such as the Class 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 with the serial numbers at the lower front center of the machines, some models had serial number that were somewhat obscure from view. Some models switched locations of the serial number as changes were made in the design of the cases of the machines, making them more difficult to locate.

The following pictures should help you to locate the serial numbers of several of the more common machines:

Class 5 Key Driven Calculators - The early Class 5 machines (shoe box case style) had the serial number on the top of the machine, just below the row of "1's" keytops. Some of these machines have been found with the serial number plates removed, which may have been done as a result of the successful lawsuit of patent infringement brought by the Felt and Tarrant Company.

Later model Class 5 machines generally have the serial number etched into the bottom of the machine. They are usually very easy to locate.

Class 8 and 9 "portable" adding machines - The early machines always had the serial number etched into the keyboard plate just below the "1's" row of keytops. Easy to spot, although sometimes difficult to read, the serial is usually painted with white characters on the green keyboard plate.

Later versions of the portable adders had the serial number located in the lower center of the front of the machine, attached to the base of the machine.

The Class 50 and 60 Burroughs Typewriters  - One of the more difficult to locate serial numbers. The number is located on a metal brace on the left side of the machine, just under the carriage. The carriage must be moved to the far right side to be able to see the serial.
